Dieric (or Dirk) Bouts was a major Netherlandish painter, born in Haarlem, Netherlands, who worked in Louvain (now Belgium). He was made city painter of Louvain in 1468. He painted religious works and portraits in a linear, reserved, yet deeply felt style influenced by Rogier van der Weyden. Bouts skillfully used landscape as background and depicted still-life objects as accessories. Famous for the subtlety of his coloring and for his ability to suggest space in his interiors and landscapes, he is considered a foremost northern painter of his time, and is considered by some to be surpassed only by Jan van Eyck. Outstanding among Bouts's works is the Last Supper (1464-1467), a panel in his Sacramental Altarpiece, painted for Saint Pierre, Louvain. Also important is the Ordeal by Fire (1473?, MusÊes Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels). Other works include The Birth of Christ and Portrait of a Man (1462), possibly a self-portrait (both National Gallery, London).
